Member Profile:
Chris McCann, President, 1-800-FLOWERS
Chris
McCann never pictured himself making a career of selling
flowers and chocolates. So when his eldest brother Jim
approached him about helping full-time with his 7-year-old
flower business, the 20-something McCann was skeptical,
to say the least.
"My
reaction was not necessarily enthusiasm, because I didn't
go to college to be a florist," asserted McCann.
"It's not what I was intending to do."
But
his brother presented a compelling argument.
"He
explained why he got into the flower business,"
McCann said. "It was a large, highly-fragmented
business; there was no Holiday Inn or McDonald's in
the flower business, and therefore there was opportunity
for someone to create that."
Fast-forward
thirty years and the McCann brothers have created that
big business they were hoping for with 1-800-FLOWERS.COM.

A
conversation with
Quiester Craig
Beta Gamma Sigma President 2000-2002
"Why
shouldn't honor and integrity be lifetime? Why shouldn't
wisdom, continued learning, the idea of learning to
learn, why shouldn't that be lifetime? And why shouldn't
earnestness be lifetime? This is what lifetime membership
means. You have earned this, now let's keep earning
it every day of our lives."

BGS members! We want to
track your community service hours throughout the Society's
centennial year. Seem demanding? It's really not, because
we know a lot of you are already doing something
in your communities. But if you never log
your hours on Tuttidaré, we will have no way
of knowing about it!
Would you take a few minutes today
to log into your account and document the hours each
month that you volunteer (or, if you'd prefer, a cumulative
guess for the year)?
Many of your fellow BGS members
have already begun this process., donating more than
1,000 hours of their time to charitable causes. Below
is some insight from Jonathan Dudzinski, a recent graduate
of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
As an undergraduate, I had the good fortune of coauthoring a paper with one of my professors that investigated the performance and feasibility of implementing a unique method of valuing stocks, and I am now in the process of incorporating a hedge fund to put the research into practice.
It's very easy to go through life so interested
in one's personal well-being and aspirations that
we never truly touch another person's life; and
make no mistake about it, that is a hollow and
sorry way to use our limited time here on this
earth. There is nothing as gratifying and empowering
as helping those in need. Nothing else even begins
to compare with the joy of helping others. |

This
month in
BGS History: |
Since
1921 Beta Gamma Sigma had been bound by its
agreement with AACSB to induct only students
from AACSB accredited institutions. However,
the Society began discussing whether the bylaws
should be changed to allow some small number
of students from non-AACSB-accredited schools
to be inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma lifetime
membership.
These
discussions continued through May 1972, when
the issue was put to a vote of the chapters.
Member schools voted 40-24 to oppose the limited
invitation and recognition of students from
non-accredited AACSB member schools. This vote
re-affirmed Beta Gamma Sigma’s exclusive
relationship with AACSB, which continues to
this day.
