A conversation with
Sara Freedman
Beta Gamma Sigma President 2004-2006

"Beta Gamma Sigma puts a great emphasis on excellence in business education. But we recognize that that’s only part of what our students need to be successful. The other part comes from the values that the organization supports and asks students to live with. It’s not just the wisdom portion, but it’s also honor and earnestness as well as honesty, integrity and ethical behavior. These are the kinds of things we think students need to hear in context, outside the classroom. And we believe the organization gives an opportunity for that."

BGS members! We want to track your community service hours throughout the Society's centennial year. Seem demanding? It's really not, because we know a lot of you are already doing something in your communities. But if you never log your hours on Tuttidaré, we will have no way of knowing about it!

Would you take a few minutes today to log into your account and document the hours each month that you volunteer (or, if you'd prefer, a cumulative guess for the year)?

Many of your fellow BGS members have already begun this process., donating more than 2,000 hours of their time to charitable causes. Below is some insight from a fellow BGS member.

As an undergraduate at Boston College, I was instilled with the Jesuit ideals of volunteerism and being “men and women for and with others.” I decided to run the ING NYC Marathon to raise funds for the New York Asian Women’s Center and I began volunteering with the National Organization for Women-New York City’s Activist Alliance to continue my commitment to social justice and women’s rights issues.

For me, service to the community did not end when I left campus. When I learned about the Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) Girls’ Empowerment session, it spoke to me immediately as a way to continue my past student advocacy into new forms of activism. I participated in the Girls’ Empowerment session designed around leadership, life skills, and reproductive health issues related to boosting the confidence of young female Ghanaians.
