BGS Member Profile:
Matt Renaud, CFO, ACDI/VOCA

Matt Renaud always wanted to join the Peace Corps.

Even after obtaining an accounting degree from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, it was a desire he just couldn’t shake. It was something he had wanted to do since hearing one of his junior high teachers share stories about her Peace Corps experience in Costa Rica.

Two years after college, Renaud could fight the urge no longer. Instead of continuing with his public tax job, Renaud followed his heart and applied to the program.

This year, October 27th should be special to you if you are a BGS member who likes to give back. The Central Office is encouraging all members to volunteer for a few hours in their community on behalf of Beta Gamma Sigma's Centennial year. We're calling it the BGS Gives Back Day of Service.

If you already have an idea or a project planned for the Day of Service, thumb ups to you! If you are still brainstorming, keep going because you are on the right track. Once you nail down what you want to do, ask other BGS members at your college or in your alumni network to join you. You are welcome to include your family and friends as well. The project can be for any cause or charity you want to support. If you need help finding a project, we suggest you start with Points of Light, Red Cross Blood Drive, or Hands On Network.

Once you have your group (it could be just you, it could be 50 of you), commit to serve that day. How do you do that? Well, we're working with Tuttidaré , an online log to track the hours you volunteer. We have an awesome walk-you-through-it tutorial hereWe need one BGS member to register the project your group is doing.

Don't remember how to log into your account on Tuttidaré?  Click here

Don't have time on the 27th? As long as you indicate you are volunteering between October 15th and November 15th, your hours are counted when you log them on Tuttidaré.

Even more interesting, Lenovo is giving away 2 tablets in a drawing for members who log any volunteer service they have done this year on behalf of BGS!

Don't let this day pass by you. If you want to start a dialogue with the Central Office about your ideas, ask for guidance, or trouble shoot registering; Natalie Oesch (noesch@betagammasigma.org) is at your disposal.

If you serve in some way this fall, consider making it a part of the BGS Centennial. Let's make October 27th a memorable day for you, your community, and of course, BGS, too!

Photo of the Month
:

The Original Prof. Elwell
While previous "Photos of the Month" have featured the Society's owl mascot, we felt we would be remiss if we didn't share this photo of his namesake, Beta Gamma Sigma's first president Fayette H. Elwell. This photo was sent to BGS by Professor Elwell's grandson Bob Berry. He and his other relatives have thoroughly enjoyed the tribute.
This month in
BGS History:

In 1970 Beta Gamma Sigma changed the way it named its chapters. Since 1913 chapters had been given a Greek letter and the name of the state – for example, in 1958 the Delta of Illinois chapter was established at DePaul University. Starting in 1970, this chapter was referred to simply as the DePaul University Chapter.
This decision came about because of the rapidly increasing number of chapters throughout the decade of the 1960s and the confusion with the Greek letters.

Mark your calendars for the next

Beta Gamma Sigma, in conjunction with the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University, is pleased to announce the second of the Society's Meet The Leaders of Business Speaker Series events. The event will take place October 11, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA and will feature Denise Morrison, President and CEO of the Campbell Soup Company.

Not in Philadelphia? Not a problem.

Beta Gamma Sigma will once again provide access to the event via a live webcast. Society members, regardless of their location, will be able to take part in this outstanding event.
