Highlights from the 2010 BGS Summer Survey
During this past summer, Beta Gamma Sigma conducted a three-part
survey
series geared specifically toward the Society's newest members.
A remarkable 618 completed the first survey, nearly 10% of the
recently-inducted class. Through approximately 30 questions, the
survey provided students opportunity to honestly reflect on their initial impressions of Beta Gamma Sigma and its benefits to members.
Additional topics addressed in the surveys included:
As chapters anticipate a new wave of inductees this coming semester,
it may also be helpful to pass on a few insights gained from the surveys about the Beta Gamma Sigma invitation process.
Regarding the Invitation Process:
- In-class tapping ceremonies invoked the most positive response from students. Reasons cited included:
• Demonstration of exclusivity
• Providesd direct encouragement from the faculty and staff
presenting the invite
- Most students invited through a tapping ceremony responded that this invitation method positively influenced their decision to join; conversely, those invited through email were the most likely to say it did not positively influence their decision.
- If a part of the invitation process was changed, students would increase encouragement from faculty and staff members and add more formality to better represent the honor of Beta Gamma Sigma.
- Students indicated that a school-hosted event made them feel very adequately recognized as a new member.
