Board of Governors

Beta Gamma Sigma would like to congratulate those new members of the BGS Board of Governors who joined on July 1, 2008. The entire list of officers and Board members can be found at http://www.betagammasigma.org/board.htm.

Beta Gamma Sigma B-Mail

Beta Gamma Sigma wanted to remind its Chapter Representatives that the BGS B-Mail, sent regularly by email to chapter contacts, is very important. We realize the Society sends out much information, and while we hope you are interested in all of it, it is vital that you read the B-Mail each time it is sent. It contains up-to-date information on all things important to collegiate chapters. This includes deadlines, programs, tips and best practices to make the chapters as successful as possible.

To make this easier, “B-Mail” will be in the subject line of each issue. Please be sure you read it each time so you are up-to-date on Society news and programs.

Virtual Career Fair (VCF) and Virtual Graduate School Fair (VGSF)

As you may know, Beta Gamma Sigma is currently (September 15-28) holding its first-ever Virtual Career Fair and Virtual Graduate School Fair. This is a tremendous opportunity for your students if they’re looking for a job, or if they are considering different graduate programs. All the employers have specifically indicated they are interesting in attracting BGS job applicants, while each of the schools is AACSB accredited and knows the value of the Beta Gamma Sigma lifetime membership.

If you haven’t already, please encourage your students to check out the VCF (http://www.betagammasigma.org/vcf08/index.htm) and the VGSF (http://www.betagammasigma.org/vgsf08/index.htm). We think this is a very valuable new program, and plan to expand it in the future.

Update Chapter Constitution

The Beta Gamma Sigma Central Office has made updates to the Model Chapter Constitution that each chapter uses to govern the chapter. Much of the language and terminology had not been updated for some time, so the model constitution was changed to more closely reflect the Society in 2008-09.

The Central Office is requesting that each collegiate chapter download the new Model Chapter Constitution (http://www.betagammasigma.org/Forms/bgsconstitution.doc), update as appropriate, approve the updated constitution and provide a signed copy to Donna Binek in the Central Office at dbinek@betagammasigma.org by March 1, 2009. Each collegiate chapter is required to have a Chapter Constitution on file with the Central Office, and this process will ensure the accuracy of those documents.

Thank you for your assistance, and if you have any questions please contact Donna Binek.

Bylaws Change – Honorary Membership for Chapter Advisors

At the recommendation of the Board of Governors, Beta Gamma Sigma chapters approved the following change to the bylaws effective July 1, 2008.

Individuals who serve as chapter advisor and who do not otherwise qualify for membership may be inducted as honorary members upon recommendation by the head of the business unit. Contact Donna Binek at dbinek@betagammasigma.org for specifics on this process.

Survey of Membership Acceptance and Chapter Activity

http://www.betagammasigma.org/Forms/survey07-08.doc
This form must be returned by the October 1, 2008 deadline to qualify for the Spring 2009 BGS Scholarship Program, as well as consideration for the Outstanding Chapter Program. In addition, chapters will be named "Premier" or "Exemplary" Chapters based on the information from this form. We must strictly adhere to this deadline because of the timing of recognition events. Please return the completed form to bgshonors@betagammasigma.org.

Bronze Key

The Beta Gamma Sigma Key can be a symbol of academic excellence on your campus.

The Board of Governors of Beta Gamma Sigma encourages chapters to consider adding this symbol of academic excellence to their physical plant. The Key can be mounted either indoors or outdoors. The base should be obtained or built locally. Plans for a cast concrete base are available from the Central Office, but native stone or other materials may be used.

The Central Office Staff is prepared to assist chapters in fund raising efforts by providing contact information for BGS alumni of the chapter or potential donors in the area of the institution.

For information concerning the purchase of the BGS Key for display on your campus, please contact James Viehland, Executive Director, at jviehland@betagammasigma.org or download the informational Bronze Key flyer.

Click here to see how other collegiate chapters have chosen to display the bronze key.
