2012-2013 Membership of Acceptance Survey

Description: Description: http://www.betagammasigma.org/email/graphics/bgskeymedium1.gifAs a reminder, each chapter is required to complete and submit the 2012-2013 Survey of Member Acceptance and Chapter Promotional Activities.

This self-reporting mechanism determines if the chapter is named Premier or Exemplary and pre-qualifies chapters for participation in Beta Gamma Sigma's Scholarship Program as well as the Society's Outstanding Chapter and Outstanding Chapter Advisor competitions. Completion of this form in a timely manner also assists the Central Office with planning for chapters for 2013-2014 and onward.

To download the 2012-2013 Survey of Membership Acceptance and Chapter Promotional Activities, go to:
http://www.betagammasigma.org/Forms/membershipacceptance_survey_12and13.doc

Chapters are highly encouraged to complete and submit the survey as you are finalizing chapter activities for the year.

Doctoral Level Membership

Chapters inviting doctoral students have two options for the invitation. They are:

Chapter Handles Invitation: Materials can be ordered from the Central Office, sent to the chapter and the invitation can be presented by the chapter.
Central Office Handles Invitation: Names and address information for doctoral level students can be sent to the Central Office. Central Office staff will check the central database to confirm that this person is not already a member. If not a member, the invitation will then be sent from the Central Office, the acceptance will return to the Central Office and be processed and the collegiate chapter will then be notified of those having accepted membership. This is often the chosen option since doctoral students are rarely still on campus by the time the invitation is offered.

To encourage membership acceptance at the doctoral level, invitation materials will focus on the expectation that those invited will be entering academia as faculty and may be teaching students being invited to BGS membership. To be eligible for invitation at the doctoral level, one must have completed all requirements of graduation at the Ph.D. level at an AACSB accredited institution.

Chapters inviting doctoral level students should be sure to utilize the Doctoral Invitation Packet, available from the Central Office. This packet provides specific information for doctoral students which should help them realize the value of membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. Additionally, chapters are encouraged to enlist the involvement of the doctoral advisor as a means of gaining the doctoral student’s acceptance of Beta Gamma Sigma membership.

Additionally, faculty advisors are encouraged to work with doctoral program directors who can be an invaluable resource in inviting doctoral students to membership. Quite often, doctoral program directors are willing to include Beta Gamma Sigma membership as a step in completing the graduation process. Some chapters automatically award membership to all their completing doctorates.

A Note to New Business Faculty:

Having recently completed the requirements for your doctoral degree, you are automatically eligible to join Beta Gamma Sigma. This is an outstanding opportunity for those doctoral candidates who are not already members.

As a faculty member, it is likely that the best business students you teach will also be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma. These students will look to you as a leading scholar and role model. Thus, your identification with the leading scholastic honor society in business is very significant.

Why should I join Beta Gamma Sigma?

At some point, every chapter advisor will face that question at some point. There are numerous great reasons for students to accept the invitation to lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. Often, however, those eligible don't know the reasons, so they reject the invitation. Be sure your top students know the value of lifetime membership:

>> Global Recognition: Beta Gamma Sigma is the world's first truly global honor society in business, and membership is increasingly recognized as a mark of academic excellence wherever you are. It is truly a great honor to be recognized among "the best in business."
>> Graduate schools are actively recruiting BGS members: For qualifying students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in business, MBA programs are increasingly seeking the “BGS” credential for their applicants. Graduate program directors and admissions personnel are recognizing the value of recruiting “the best in business” so be sure your potential members know. MBA (and other graduate) programs are looking for them and working with Beta Gamma Sigma to get the word out. Tell your students about the great scholarship opportunities available and also let them know about the Society's Virtual Graduate School Fair.
>>

Complimentary Publications: Member benefits entitle members to receive one-year subscriptions of Bloomberg Businessweek, Fortune and The Week magazines: All new members of Beta Gamma Sigma - students, faculty, etc. - are eligible to receive the Bloomberg Businessweek subscription, which provides all new members a one-year subscription in either the print or digital format. For those with a U.S. mailing address, Fortune and The Week offer a similar one-year print subscription. To get all the details, visit the Member Benefits section of BetaNet at http://www.betagammasigma.org/benefits.htm.
