Annoucing the 2013 Outstanding Chapter Advisor

Mike Wilson
Eastern Illinois University
Mike Wilson has served as a teacher for the Eastern Illinois University community since he started working at the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences in 1983. When the university’s chapter charter was granted, and the Beta Gamma Sigma chapter was established in 1993, Wilson stepped up to take the position of chapter advisor. Since that year, Eastern Illinois University’s BGS chapter has seen much success thanks to Wilson’s commitment to business excellence.
In 1996, the chapter earned the recognition of an Outstanding Chapter. During that same year, Wilson also led a successful fundraising campaign to purchase and install a BGS key on campus. In 2000, EIU’s chapter honoree, Robert Ingram, was named as the first BGS International Honoree. The chapter has received multiple recognitions for being a Premier Chapter, has been named as an Outstanding Chapter or been given Honorable Mention status multiple times, and in 2012, was recognized as a Bronze Chapter.
In 2003, the EIU Foundation Outstanding Philanthropic Organization Award was bestowed upon the BGS chapter at the school, thanks to Wilson-led efforts to reach out to the community. When a BGS Chapter Advisor Mentor project was created, Wilson was asked to join as a mentor in 2007. Wilson makes it a point to publicize the accomplishments of the EIU Beta Gamma Sigma chapter around the school, making sure that announcements, reports and award ceremonies are known to all students. He helped to create a BGS Endowment Fund for annual scholarships at the university.
Wilson implemented several new initiatives to enhance ethical awareness on campus. As part of the EIU School of Business Ethics Awareness Week, he partnered with other faculty members to create an ethics essay contest. The chapter also co-sponsored the Holley Ethics Speaker Series along with the school of business. Making sure that BGS members at EIU were also giving back to the local community, Wilson helped start a student-led annual volunteer service activity that has already provided financial support to local non-for-profits.
Throughout the 20 years that Wilson has served Eastern Illinois University’s Beta Gamma Sigma chapter, the chapter has earned much recognition, been distinguished as a continuously growing chapter and remained active in the many programs that BGS offers.
Wilson received both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business from Eastern Illinois University.
Congratulations
Mike! Thanks for all you do for Beta Gamma Sigma!

2013 International Honoree
From 1963 to 1999, Beta Gamma Sigma presented the National Honoree Award to individuals who furthered the ideals of the Society through outstanding business and managerial leadership. Since 2000, the Society annually presents the International Honoree Award. The BGS Board of Governors is pleased to announce the selection of Robert A. McDonald, CEO and President of Procter & Gamble Co. as the 2013 International Honoree.
In his roles as Procter & Gamble Company’s chief executive officer and president, Robert A. McDonald is the chief leader of the company’s market development organizations, the global business services organization and the numerous centralized corporate functions. He continues to serve as a member of the company’s management board and served as its chief operating officer from 2007 to 2009.
Also serving as chairman of the board, Mcdonald has devoted much of his career and life to the success of Procter & Gamble. In 2009, when he became the company’s CEO, McDonald made sure to reaffirm his commitment to its core strengths: consumer understanding, brand building, go-to-market execution, global scale and innovation. Since then, Procter & Gamble has grown its sales by about four percent each year, grown earnings per share by an average of four percent and adjusted its free cash flow of about 90 percent.
McDonald earned his bachelor’s of science degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy in 1975. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as Captain, Infantry, Airborne Ranger of the 82nd Airborne Division. While serving, he also earned his MBA from the University of Utah.
The Centennial Spirit in Our Second Century
During its Centennial year, Beta Gamma Sigma planned and executed several programs that brought BGS members together around the world. As we move into our second century, Beta Gamma Sigma plans to continue the following programs as legacy events that will foster the BGS spirit among members and chapters.
Meet the Leaders of Business
New locations, top-rated speakers, and topics will be explored as Beta Gamma Sigma continues its guest speaker series. We look forward to sharing more about how to submit your school as a potential host, as well as details on tapping into lectures via satellite. A special thanks to all chapters that hosted or participated in this years’ events!
The BGS Mascot, Professor Elwell
We enjoyed keeping up with Professor Elwell's travels over the last year and loved being able to share all these wonderful photos with you. In March, we announced the winners of the Centennial photo contest, which you can view online here: http://www.betagammasigma.org/centennial/cb/0313/awards.htm
BGS will continue to accept submissions from BGS members featuring Professor Elwell and will continue to share them in the Society's publications and through social media. We hope that Elwell will be on Facebook another 100 years! To submit your own, or to view hundreds of other photos featuring the Society's Centennial mascot Professor Elwell, visit the BGS is Everywhere page located at: http://www.betagammasigma.org/centennial/bie.html
BGS Gives Back Day of Service: October 26, 2013

During fall 2012, BGS members across the country read to intercity students, built wheelchair ramps, and everything in between. The Day of Service will continue with hope that more chapters will rally around a common cause and give back their talent and time. Save the date—October 26, 2013—as a day to give back with BGS members.
Two lucky BGS members received Lenovo tablets in March for logging hours toward the BGS Gives Back project on Tutttidare.org. A special thanks to Lenovo for supporting the project in this way. Beta Gamma Sigma is proud to announce Dan House and Rose Syengo as the winners of this special drawing. Thanks to everyone who Gave Back as part of the BGS Centennial.
Any questions about the Centennial legacy programs can be directed to Natalie Oesch, Manager of Collegiate and Alumni Operations, at noesch@betagammasigma.org.
