Beta Gamma Sigma Awards Charlie
Amato and Gary Dudley the Medallion for Entrepreneurship
Beta
Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society, recently
named Charlie Amato, chairman and co-founder, and Gary Dudley, president
and co-founder, Southwest Business Corporation, recipients of its
2009 Medallion for Entrepreneurship. The award is presented annually
to individuals that contribute significantly to the strength of
the economy, combining innovative business achievement with service
to humanity.
“It is a pleasure to honor Mr. Amato and Mr. Dudley,”
said George E. Stevens, president of Beta Gamma Sigma. “Their
business success and involvement in the community is deserving of
recognition.”
Amato and Dudley were nominated for the Beta Gamma Sigma Medallion
for Entrepreneurship Award by Sam Houston State University, where
they both received their Bachelor of Business Administration degrees
in 1970 and 1969, respectively. They are two of five recipients
of this year’s award. The other 2009 recipients are
Kenneth R. Bartee, former president, McDonald Bradley Inc.; Robert
Carr, chairman and CEO, Heartland Payments Systems; and Mary Lou
Quinlan, founder and CEO, Just Ask a Woman.
The innovative leadership of Amato and Dudley has been integral
to the growth and success of Southwest Business Corporation. Throughout
the financial services company’s 30-year history, Amato and
Dudley’s entrepreneurial efforts have allowed the company
to expand and diversify its products. They have created several
subsidiaries that provide mortgage loans, business retail insurance
and investment services. Today, Southwest Business Corporation employs
more than 1,000 people and is the 13th largest privately held property
and casualty insurance company in the U.S.
The
business partners have also been active in the community as participants
in numerous leadership activities and charities throughout their
lifetimes. Amato currently serves as a board member of the Greater
San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. He is a United Way executive committee
member and member of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center Board
of Governors. Dudley serves on the board of directors of the San
Antonio Spurs Foundation and is a member of San Antonio Economic
Development Board and the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
Beta Gamma Sigma established the Medallion for Entrepreneurship
in 1994. Individuals are nominated by Beta Gamma Sigma deans, faculty
advisors and members of the board of governors. They are selected
based on their long-term, proven ability to overcome risk in new
venture development, adapt to markets and competitive environments,
provide service to humanity, and establish themselves as models
of ethical business leadership. Recipients are and announced to
the Society during the International Honoree Luncheon at the Annual
Meeting of AACSB International each spring.
