Barbara Ritter
Assistant Professor of Management, Coastal Carolina University
Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Advisor

Since the fall of 2004, Dr. Barbara Ritter has served as the faculty advisor of the Beta Gamma Sigma collegiate chapter at Coastal Carolina University. Under Ritter’s leadership, the Coastal Carolina University chapter has earned Beta Gamma Sigma Premier Chapter status for the last three years, attaining 100 percent acceptance of eligible students in two of those years.

One key to the chapter’s success has been the personal interaction between Ritter and the school’s students. Ritter works with other faculty to tap students, individually presenting them with written letters of invitation into the Society. Ritter also contacts invited members via e-mails and face-to-face meetings to recognize and honor their achievements and promote the mission of BGS.

Another key to the chapter’s success comes from various promotional efforts spearheaded by Ritter. The chapter increased its exposure on campus with the development of a website, the installation of two bulletin boards, and the purchase of a BGS bronze key.

This academic year is the fourth under Ritter’s tutelage in which the Coastal Carolina University BGS chapter has sponsored an ethical business leadership speaking series. As part of this series, several speaking events are presented each year in concert with the Jackson Center for Ethics.

Ritter has worked hard to promote the importance of BGS values by organizing opportunities for student members to volunteer their time to local charities. For the last several years, Ritter and BGS members have provided gifts during the holiday season to needy children in the Myrtle Beach area.

BGS Volunteers! was a program initiated by Ritter in the spring of 2009 to promote social responsibility amongst BGS students so that they may further serve as model students for the rest of the Wall College of Business Administration. Through this program, BGS students have worked closely with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Miracle League Foundation, and participated in events supporting the American Heart Association.

As the 2010 Outstanding Chapter Advisor, Ritter will receive a $1000 cash award and will present a session to other BGS collegiate chapter advisors during the 2010-11 year.
