Glossary of Beta Gamma Sigma Terms

The following is a list of commonly used Beta Gamma Sigma terms.

  • BetaNet - Home page of Beta Gamma Sigma on the World Wide Web.
  • BGS CareerCentral - Beta Gamma Sigma’s on-line job board. This service, offered exclusively to BGS members, connects “the best in business” with those corporations and organizations wishing to hire them.
  • BGS International Exchange - Official newsletter of the Society; mailed to membership at least twice per year.
  • BGS Store - Beta Gamma Sigma's on-line store for BGS Logo apparel, gifts and regalia
  • Biennial Meeting - Business meeting of the Society held every two years where members of the Board of Governors are elected.
  • Board of Governors - Elected governing body of the Society.
  • Business Achievement Award - International program that honors business persons for recognition based on nominations by collegiate chapters.
  • Central Office - International headquarters of the Society; located in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • Chapter Advisor - Faculty member who coordinates chapter activities and serves as liaison with Central Office; usually serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the collegiate chapter, as well.
  • Chapter Constitution and Bylaws - Governing documents of the collegiate chapter.
  • Chapter Honoree - Individual selected for special recognition by the chapter at the induction ceremony based on outstanding business contributions.
  • Faculty Driven Honor Society - Beta Gamma Sigma is an honor society administered by faculty to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of business students; BGS is not a student club. Chapters are required to have a Faculty President and Secretary/Treasurer; vice presidents may be student members.
  • Induction - Ceremony that provides membership to individuals.
  • Installation - Ceremony that establishes a chapter of the Society.
  • Lapel Pin - BGS insignia provided to new members as part of membership.
  • Letter of Intent - Written request to the Board of Governors requesting approval to establish a Beta Gamma Sigma chapter.
  • Lifetime Membership Fee - $65 (U.S.) fee, which provides membership for a lifetime.
  • Medallion for Entrepreneurship - Program that selects entrepreneurs for international recognition based on nominations by collegiate chapters.
  • Membership Acceptance Rate - Percentage of those invited to membership who accept the invitation. The membership acceptance rate is used as a threshold criteria for consideration for the Scholarship and Outstanding Chapter programs.
  • Membership Certificate - Personalized certificate of membership presented to new members as part of membership.
  • Outstanding Chapter - Program that awards scholarships to the most outstanding collegiate chapters of the Society.
  • MDP (Membership Data Profile) - Personal information sheet completed by each new member and provided to the Central Office, allowing members to be included in the Society’s membership records.
  • Regalia - Items portraying the Society’s logo, which are available to chapters and/or members in the BGS Store
  • Ritual - Formal program that iterates the purposes of the Society and requires a commitment from new members; recited at the induction ceremony.
  • Scholarship Program - Program which provides $500 in matching scholarship funds for chapters that meet specific criteria.
  • Second Recognition Certificate - Certificate which can be presented to current BGS members who again meet the criteria for membership, but at another degree level (i.e. masters or doctoral level).
  • Tapping Ceremony - Ceremony where those eligible for Beta Gamma Sigma membership are recognized in the classroom with a formal invitation to become a member.
